Inside the PokerStars VIP Club Live Summer Party in Vancouver

One of the best things about PokerStars is their creativity when it comes to rewarding people for playing on the site.

Last year they started VIP Club Live, a series of parties for PokerStars players taking place in major cities around the world. This summer they brought the party to my neck of the woods: Vancouver.

The party was hosted by the Imperial, which is at the corner of Main and Cordova. I’ll admit that I was a little surprised at this location choice, since it is affectionately known as

Tech Tips: How to Take Great Poker Photos

There are countless settings for various cameras so we’re just going to touch the basics.

ISO: This is light sensitivity and there’s a good chance you’re going to have to crank this for good shots in most poker rooms. Most modern SLR’s can do over 1,000 ISO with no problems.

Aperture: You’re going to want this as wide open as possible for two reasons. One, you want to let the most light in. Two, you want to get a nice background blur going to help make the background more dynamic. We’re talking f/2.8 or lower. Aperture is horribly confusing, by the way. Lower numbers essentially mean more light. F/1.8-F/2.8 is good for poker. Beyond F/4.5 is rough. The exception to this rule is group shots or pictures of the entire room.

Shutter speed: Unless you’re trying to capture cards in the air, you don’t have to worry about this one too much. Most players are quite still and you’ll be more concerned about getting maximum light.

White Balance: You can go with auto and hopefully do alright but in our experience most poker rooms are way too warm because of tungsten lighting. Your camera should have a setting for tungsten bulbs. Of course if you really want to be a pro you can grab a white piece of paper and get some custom white balance going on.

3. How to Take Photos in a Poker Room

First of all, let’s just assume you have media credentials because if you don’t you’re not getting past the rail and you will be hard-pressed to get close enough to the action to document it.

Poker rooms are vastly different around the world. Some are well lit and offer interesting backgrounds while others have horrible lighting and look like basements. You have to make do with what you have at your disposal.

If the tournament has a TV table that’s being utilized, by all means use it to get photos. You’re all but guaranteed to get some good shots thanks to professional-grade lighting and dramatic backgrounds.

How to approach a table:

Decide which seat you want to shoot and set up in a corresponding position (remember to stay out of the way of the tournament staff).Ideally you're going to want to be a bit lower so you get some distance between your subject and the background. Depending on your height you can either take one knee, both knees or use a monopod (tripods are a bit bulky).Take a few throwaway shots of your subject just to make sure your settings are correct.Wait until the player has cards (this makes players in late position easier to shoot).Try to catch them looking up, instead of down. It's going to be even easier if your subject is involved in a hand that goes on for awhile.Rinse/Repeat4. Examples of Poker Photography

Here are some examples of poker photography, both good and bad, with a little bit of commentary on each one.

Tech Tips: Best Cameras, Lenses for Photographing Poker Tournaments

Standard DSLR

This includes heavy hitters Canon and Nikon, which offer entry-level models that cost around $400-$600 but have professional grade cameras that cost thousands. These are what most professional photographers use and the lens selection is pretty much unparalleled. You can’t really go wrong with Canon or Nikon.

Mirrorless DSLR

Lately mirrorless cameras have been getting more and more publicity thanks to a few killer features. There are some camera enthusiasts who think this style of camera is the future of photography.

Perhaps the two most highly-touted advantages are smaller size and less moving parts on the inside.

Some of the biggest players in this market are Panasonic and Olympus, which use the micro four-thirds bracket system and Sony’s NEX line which uses E-Mount, Fujifilm’s X-Mount and Leica’s M-Mount. Canon and Nikon also offer mirrorless cameras but they were rather late to the party.

Given the sandbox nature of GTA, it’s kind of strange that poker hasn’t been on the table yet.

It’s even stranger considering the number of references to poker in GTA games over the years.

Delving Deeper into Bitcoin with John Light, Adam Sah

Cypto-currency Bitcoin remains an intriguing option for online poker players.

We investigated the subject earlier this year in a Bitcoin feature we did on SealsWithClubs founder Brian Micon.

We’re going one step farther today with a special Q&A by Nadia Hanna with Bitcoin experts John Light and Adam Sah.

John Light is an entrepreneur with a professional background in business operations and online marketing. He discovered Bitcoin when researching alternative currencies and eventually decided to move to Silicon Valley to start a Bitcoin consulting business where individuals and companies can learn about the digital currency.

Adam Sah opened an artisan food store, Buyers Best Friend, in 2012 and experienced the pain of handling cash, processing credit cards, costs and fees. They company designed their own Point of Sale (POS) system for processing bitcoins.

Hello iPhone!: A Brief History of Poker and Mobile Gaming

The introduction to mobile gambling for most poker and casino fans came in 2007 when the iPhone made its debut.

The real roots of mobile gaming were planted years earlier, though. Dedicated apps make it much easier to play poker or blackjack today on your smartphone or tablet.

But Java-based cell phone gambling games were around in the early-to-mid 2000s. A few options for betting real money on sportsbetting, poker and casino games even existed.

The Stone Age of Mobile Gambling (pre-iPhone)

Early cell phone games were fairly basic and often ran into bandwidth issues. Universal 3G coverage still lagged in many areas.

Single-player casino games and sportsbetting were the most common as they didn’t suffer from lag or latency issues like poker did when trying to connect multiple players in real time.

Most games were for play chips only and geared towards offering a quick and casual way to kill time with limited graphics and gambling options.

Hello, iPhone (2007-2010)

How to Play Online Poker on Your TV Using AirPlay and Apple TV

Does it ever seem ridiculous that you’re grinding away on a 13-inch laptop when you’ve got a 50-inch LED/LCD/Plasma monstrosity five feet away?

Well if you have a newish MacBook or an iPad or iPhone and an Apple TV you can make that happen today.

Apple’s AirPlay protocol makes it ridiculously easy to sling your entire desktop to your TV and we’re going to show you how.

Note: You’ll need an Apple TV to make any of the following guides work.

What is AirPlay?

AirPlay is a protocol released by Apple in 2010 that allows wireless streaming of audio, video and photos but recently was made even more useful by allowing AirPlay Mirroring.

AirPlay Mirroring allows users to stream the screen on their iPad, iPhone or Apple laptop to any display with an Apple TV attached without any need for cables.

More and more devices are offering support for AirPlay and it's very effective so don’t expect the standard to go away any time soon.

How to Use AirPlay for iPad or iPhone

This is ridiculously easy.

You’ll need an iPhone or iPad with iOS 7 and an Apple TV (and an actual TV, obv).

1. First off make sure that AirPlay mirroring is enabled on your Apple TV. You’ll find the option in Settings>AirPlay but it should be enabled by default.

2. Make sure that your Apple TV and iOS device are connected to the same WiFi network.

3. Now open Control Center on your iPad or iPhone with a quick swipe from the bottom of your screen (check below for a visual on this).

4. Tap AirPlay, Select Apple TV and turn on Mirroring.

5. Now boot up whatever poker app you want on your iOS device and you’re ready to go (we used PokerStars in this example).

That’s it. It’s honestly that easy.

Couple notes: First off, playing poker on a TV from an iPad isn’t perfect because there’s no cursor and you can’t exactly see what you’re about to press on the TV. Secondly there is a bit of lag between the TV and iPad.

Also the resolution doesn’t exactly match up with your TV so you’ll have some letterboxing going on.

PokerData Takes Hand Tracking Software to the Cloud

Today we're taking a look at PokerData, a brand new poker hand-tracking solution that automatically takes data from wherever you're playing online poker and stores it in the cloud.

That means that whether you're playing on your computer at work, at home or at your friend's house you'll be able to access and add to your poker hand database.

PokerData Pioneering New Frontiers of Hand Tracking

Hand tracking software is by no means a new thing. Online poker players have been using programs like Hold'em Manager and PokerTracker for years.

PokerData is different in that your database is stored online and can be accessed from anywhere. The days of maintaining separate databases for every computer you play poker on are long gone.

5 Things Online Poker Could Learn From Hit Game Hearthstone

Over the last six months an online card game has taken the gaming world by storm and almost instantaneously created a massive online community with countless blogs dedicated to the game’s strategy and development.

No we’re not talking about online poker.

Hearthstone, which was developed by gaming giant Blizzard, is shaking up the gaming status quo with its free-to-play model that’s already attracted tens of thousands of players.

Incredibly Hearthstone is still in open beta and hasn’t even been officially launched.

The designers of Magic: The Gathering are likely worried and they should be with Forbes publishing articles like

Can Brain Training Software Improve Your Poker Game?

Brain training software has never been more popular.

Every day you see people using the programs on smart phones, tablets, laptops and video game consoles.

In some ways they aren’t that far removed from multi-tabling online poker as both require critical thinking and dexterity with a mouse.

Whether brain-training software actually increases your intelligence is an entirely different matter as numerous studies have shown the programs actually do very little.

On the bright side the programs do allow users to brush up on their math fundamentals and quick reflexes.

The inherent problem for poker players when it comes to mainstream brain-training software is that it teaches you to memorize certain numbers but they aren’t poker specific enough.

Instead you’d probably be better served by something like PokerCruncher or DonkeyTest, which would at least build better muscle memory.

All that said, brain training software likely won’t hurt your game so here’s a look at three of the most popular options:

Weed, Speed and Smart Pills: A Guide to How Drugs Help and Hurt Your Poker Game

Whether they're over-the-counter, legal or illegal, drugs are routinely in the mix for live and online poker players, and many of those players believe the drugs actually enhance their performance.

13-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth once said in an interview on QuadJacks.com:

"There's a drug, I don't know the name of it, but it's something like speed. I'm talking about a really heavy drug. Many poker players have taken this drug in the past 10 years. Almost all players who took this drug have won one or two million dollars over a six to eight month period. But then the effect of the drug stopped working, which left many of them with a drug addiction. I smoked weed about 25 years ago or something like that. But I'm not a person who's into drugs at all."

While the Poker Brat's authority as a drug expert might be questionable, what's not up for debate are drugs' pervasiveness in the poker world.

Today we explore the full catalogue of illicit substances being used by live and online poker players, including street drugs like weed and cocaine as well as so-called "smart pills" like Adderall and Provigil.

We'll go down the list drug-by-drug to find out how they affect poker players and how they fit into the poker world.

Adderall (Amphetamine Mixed Salts)

If you believe the hype around Adderall it might look like the holy grail for poker players, but more and more studies are debunking its effectiveness as a mind-enhancing drug.

Adderall is an amphetamine formulation commonly used to treat attention deficit hyper-activity disorder but it's widely believed to increase concentration and mental agility in people who do not suffer from ADHD.

Gilbert Arenas Plays High-Stakes Poker with Pros in Bahamas

Gilbert Arenas may or may not return to NBA but for the time being the former Golden State Warrior/Washington Wizard/Orlando Magic/Memphis Grizzly/Shanghai Shark is tossing around expensive poker chips at the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas.

Arenas was a high-profile guest at the PCA cash games today and wagered thousands at a high-stakes Pot-Limit Omaha table against pro poker players Jason Mercier and Scott Seiver.

We're not sure how Arenas fared in the game overall but in the time we watched he won a massive pot with a set of tens and then lost a big one to Mercier. Arenas scooped a huge pot against Seiver and then decided to cash out a large stack of chips - what looked to be around $30,000.

The man formally known as "Agent Zero" and "The Hibachi" wasn’t exactly intimidated at the table of hardened pros either. He was extremely active, joked with his tablemates liberally and played nearly every hand before the game finally broke and he headed out for dinner.

The former second-round draft pick has had a controversial career that's included bringing handguns into the locker room, playing online poker at halftime of games and a contract that was named one of the worst in NBA history.

After he was amnestied by the Magic Arenas' contract was even expanded so he'll be playing poker on the NBA's dime well into 2016.

Last month Arenas told TMZ he was training for a return to the NBA. Hit the jump for a collection of photos of Arenas in the Bahamas.

PokerStars Tackles Xbox-Style Achievements with Daily Challenges

Years ago video game developers figured out a way to make players invest more time in their games and online poker giants like PokerStars are finally taking note.

An achievement-based system in video games is a tried-and-true formula that gives players special titles or trophies based on various extra accomplishments in a game such as never dying once.

In December PokerStars launched their Daily Challenge promo that rewards players for accomplishing a unique feat such as playing one Sit & Go or earning 1 VPP in ring games. It has a lot of similarities to achievement systems like Xbox Live’s Gamerscore program.

Seven Mind-Boggling, Head-Scratching Poker Folds

We all like to tell stories about our heroic, Negreanu-esque home-game folds, don't we?

Kings before the flop. A straight on the turn. A full house on the river.

Hands we "just had a feeling" about and somehow, miraculously, we managed to be right. Or, of course, painfully wrong.

As part of our love and fascination with the psychic fold we've put together (with the help of our friends at Poker Olymp) seven remarkable folds from poker history -- some actually heroic and others, well ... a bit less so.

1. Gary Paterson Accidentally Folds Fours Full

The first fold on our list comes from Gary Paterson and is more in the "Huh?" category,

Mostly it shows just how important it is to remember your cards right - which must be the case here. Otherwise he just folds a full house on the turn for no reason.

Any time someone says "I'll limp," though, you might expect something a little unorthodox.

2. Roberto Romanello Folds Jacks Full on the River

You might remember this phenomenal laydown from the 2008 Main Event, and it still astounds us to this day.

Mike Matusow, of course, freaks out when Roberto Romanello shows he folded his full house - and is right! Although looking back Geller made such a clear show of strength Romanello could be pretty sure he was beat. Still ...

3. Phil Hellmuth Puts on Absurd Show, Makes Absurd Fold

Take a normal player, put him on a televised poker show, give him 15 big blinds and queens (with a raise before him) and 99% of the time he'll (quite correctly) move in.

Now exchange "normal player" with "Phil Hellmuth," who somehow thinks he has the gift of second sight, and it becomes a whole different ball game (and an absurd show):

4. Mikhail Smirnov Folds Quads in Big One

Poker Equipment You Need: Bacon Po(r)ker Chips

And so forth.

Pledges start at $6, which gets you one chip, and go all the way up to $1,395 for 2,500 chips.

Every chip weighs 10 grams and is made of ceramic so you’re certainly getting a high-quality chip, regardless of meat affiliation.

If you really, really, really like bacon, well, you’ve probably found your new chip set. Personally we’re waiting for Oreo-themed chips so we can get our TeddyKGB on.

For information just check out the Kickstarter page.

One Super Simple, Free Way to Manage Your Poker Bankroll

Good bankroll management is one of the single most important skills that rookie poker players can develop and a new web app, that’s free, offers some great fundamentals in a matter of minutes.

BankRoll Management by Poker.co.uk is a web-based app that requires no sign-up or download and is completely free.

Users can simply slot in their bankroll and level of experience and they’ll instantly be given a number of metrics including suggested stake level, stack per table, when to move up and profit they should be hoping to make per table.

You can also select from the three major poker variants including cash games, Sit & Goes and tournaments, which obviously all have very different buy-in levels.

The app suggests recreational players take some shots in bigger games for the fun of it while serious players should tighten up.

For example if you enter a bankroll of $500 at a recreational level of skill then it will suggest the following (and more):

Stake level: $.10/$.25Stack per table: $25Jump to next level: $125

Or for Sit & Goes

Buy-in level: $15Profit per tournament: Min Cash-$24.66 Jump to next level: $250

It’s all basic information but undoubtedly useful for a new player. It’s also incredibly fast and easy to use.

In fact we’ve embedded the tool below if you want to give it a try:

14 Highly Questionable Poker-Themed Tattoos

We love poker. We truly do.

Tattoos ... meh. We've seen some nice ones over the years, but truth be told we've never been so keen on a virtual date stamp that says "hey, remember what you kind of were into in 1996?"

Poker tattoos are a pretty ballsy decision. It's a great game, for sure, but who knows how you're going to feel about it 10 years from now when you can't beat 1c/2c online.

Here are some poker lovers who clearly aren't concerned about that.

Note: This is all in good fun. We like your tattoos, really. Also if any of these photos are yours and you'd like us to take them down, please let us know.

The Ultimate $10 Million Poker Home Game Set-Up

Organizing a fun night of poker is, truth be told, much more than just cracking a new deck of cards and buying some beer.

If you're part a group of friends who rotate the hosting duties, the stakes are even higher. And let's be honest: you want to be the alpha male among alpha males with the set-up your crew looks forward to the most.

If you want to be the man with the ultimate poker home game, PokerListings Holland's Hans Faber has sourced the high-end equipment you'll need to put you over the top.

Fair warning, though: your average Walmart-acquired chip set isn't going to cut it.

By Hans Faber

Before we even get started on the high-end hardware, every poker room needs some basics.

Regardless of your income you can't skimp on the beer. A keg of shitty beer might impress in terms of volume but quality over quantity is what matters.

It doesn't hurt to have your opponents a little tipsy but a keg will just make things sloppy and your game will likely devolve accordingly.

Wall-to-wall flatscreens around the room are also essential with a variety of sports on 24/7 to pick from. You can let the dealer decide whether the poker game should be temporarily stopped for key moments on screen.

Also for the wall: a few portraits of the greatest of the great in poker - Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese or Stu Ungar, say - can really put your atmosphere over the top.

On to the ultimate poker hardware ...

Poker Friends Offers Private Mobile Poker Games

Poker Friends is yet another entry in the crowded free-to-play poker app market but it does have one killer feature.

Players on Poker Friends can create their own private games for friends and family without any random strangers in the game.

It’s similar to the way PokerStars offers home games on their desktop client but have yet to add the feature to their mobile offering.

It’s a significant feature that, for instance, allows a group of friends waiting at the airport to instantly cue up a private cash game. Theoretically users can wager money with each other in real life without having to pay any rake.

Interestingly Poker Friends also has an asynchronous format, similar to the old school play-by-mail, which lets users take their turn at the time they choose. Games could potentially last weeks, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

We spent some time fooling around with Poker Friends and while it’s not a serious poker offering, with plenty of advertisements for buying play money chips, it would be worth it for the bigger online poker operators to take a closer look at the product.

Poker Friends is available for iOS and Android. To learn more check out the Poker Friends website.

An advertisement for the app is embedded after the jump:

Behold the World’s Greatest/Most Terrifying Poker Player

We’ve been in the poker coverage game for over a decade now and we’ve developed a few theories on what makes the great players so damn good.

With that in mind we’ve created the monstrosity you see above, which is a Frankenstein-style collection of some of the most famous poker players in the world.

If you ever see this guy staring across at you from the other side of the table you might as well fold your hand, give him all your chips and give up poker for Uno tournaments.

For those keeping track at home here’s a breakdown of the world’s greatest poker player.

1. Phil Ivey’s intense stare, obv.2. French Canadian pro Erik Cajelais’ fearsome right arm. Perfect for raising. Or punching.3. Scotty Nguyen’s luxurious hair. That’s Prince of Poker style, baby.4. Doyle Brunson’s iconic cowboy hat. It’s seen things.5. Teddy
